Home Automation in Australia will get a shake up when the Amazon Echo finally gets released, also known as Alexa. While Alexa may not be available in Australia yet, we are excited for when it will be because it is set to reshape the home automation market here in Australia. Alexa is breaking new ground overseas for several reasons and is set to start wowing Australians any day now. So, what is so special about Amazon’s latest must-have toy? Read on…
Alexa is (or will be) Affordable.
Often advances in technology come with advancing price tags, but so far Alexa has proven to be more affordable than other great leaps in technology. Though we can’t say for sure what the retail price will be when Alexa is released here, given that Amazon is a global company their affordability is likely to transfer.
Alexa Works With Existing Home Automation Systems.
Forbes recently noted that the smart home, or home automation, market has been “extremely crowded and fragmented”, with companies trying to gain the majority market share. But what Alexa has done is opened their device to existing companies and allowed their voice control hub to work in conjunction with these companies. Alarm.com has integrated extremely well with Alexa, having the voice command “Alexa, ask Alarm.com to…” from there you can reset the thermostat, turn the lights on and off, get the living room ready for movie night, shut the house down for night, set the alarm, the list goes on and on.
No More Remotes.
Smart home remotes are still relatively expensive, and there are those with voice control capability but there almost a waste of time. As John Sciacca points out “The problem with most voice control systems to date is they required picking up a remote and speaking into it. And once I’ve grabbed a remote, I might as well just use the remote. You know. The one that’s in my hand. And sitting back and saying, “Channel up…channel up…channel up…” is more work than just using a bit of micro-force in my thumb to press a button.”
That’s exactly why, until now, voice control has been more successful for things like search, because it’s quicker to say “what time is it in Germany right now?” than type out each letter individually. But Alexa is changing the game because it’s completely hands-free, it’s making voice control what it should be… quick and simple.
Yes, you can retro fit Alexa. Enough said. Not only that but you can sync it with your car. Now we are getting somewhere with how we thought the future would look.
Alexa Is Just Fun.
You can use the system to wake you with classical music, or heavy metal, the choice is yours. It will also read you your favourite e-book, or order you a pizza, tell you a joke (probably not a good one, but still) and who knows what great features are still in the making.
Home Automation In Australia Is Ready For a Shake-Up.
Home automation in Australia has been on the verge of taking off for a few years now, is Amazon’s Echo exactly what the Australian market needs? We think so and we can’t wait until it’s available here. Though we have to admit… We already got ours!!!!
